VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS

Bullis Charter School’s commitment to visual and performing arts is an essential component of our whole child educational experience. Through drama, music, dance, public speaking, sculpting, designing, painting, or performing all students have opportunities to engage with the visual and performing arts at BCS.

Our investment supports 11 full-time, credentialed teaching specialists in arts education across all grades and campuses.  In Tk-5th grade classrooms these specialists provide instruction through integrated, project-based learning units, as well as co-curricular and extracurricular classes. Middle School students can more deeply explore their VAPA interests through year-long elective classes.

Opportunities for public performances abound as BCS annually produces two elementary drama productions, a middle school musical, and countless art, music, choir, drama, and dance showcases across all grades.

A MAGICAL
PRODUCTION

In November 2023, over 150 learners in 2nd-5th grades (along with their supportive 4th-8th grade tech crew!) transformed the North MPR into an enchanted forest filled with fairies, elves, and magical creatures as they performed our annual fall play EMMA AND THE LOST UNICORN. Our two casts, one from our South Campus and another from the North Campus, performed in six productions over busy two weekends.

Based on the popular book by Trisha Sugarek, the story follows young Emma as she solves a series of riddles to release Rainey, a prince transformed into a unicorn, from his curse and return the forest to peace and harmony!

Our young performers and tech crew worked so hard and learned so much, and being a part of this production will become a core memory for them. Art is transformative; it changes us and helps us realize that together, we can make magic. We hope that after the curtain closes, [they] take home a little of that magic, too. - Lara Press, Director and BCS Drama Specialist
